Friends, What Uganda is doing is criminal!
The Problem:
This week, the Ugandan Parliament passed a law making it illegal to be gay, not commit homosexual acts, but simply to be the beautiful person you were born as! FEM Alliance Uganda, is an LGBTQ+ organization that provides vital services including shelter, food, clothing, counseling, and medicine.
The Urgency:
The shelter which houses 11 homeless LGBTQ+ folks was raided by police. Their website was taken down by the government (so I can't even direct you to it!) The people that were living in the shelter are now in tents in hiding. They could be found any day. Landlords are now considered criminals under the new law with a minimum 10-year sentence if they aid LGBTQ people. Since the NGO rents space, the landlord and neighbors have threatened to expose their location. Although western media hasn't reported it, 4 of their transgender members have already been murdered. Numerous members of the organization have already been raped, beaten, and/or arrested by vigilante gangs and police. I cannot stress how desperate the situation there is.
The Need:
If we can purchase a home on land to create a relatively safe space in a safer neighborhood, a landlord cannot come to do repairs or threaten them constantly. We also need to purchase a vehicle so that they can avoid taking public transportation which is where many LGBTQ+ folks are being targeted. A car would be especially helpful when they bail people out of jail so they are not followed as soon as they are released.
My Plea:
This barbaric law will not go away and some 30 African countries have similar but not as harsh penalties. This means that just going over the border is not an option. Any amount of help can save lives. Please pass this on to anyone who cares about the worth and dignity of all people and help save these incredibly brave and beautiful people.
Thank you for your generosity. If you would like to help the Executive Director, Jay Mulucha, escape the country that is now wanted by the police and government, please go to his separate funding page. We are seeking asylum for him in the US as his life has been specifically threatened.
