My name is Brittany Surface and I have been going through some major medical issues during the past 4 years. While I have great medical insurance, it doesn't pay for everything. I fractured my left wrist September 27th of 2011. I was diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) , a very painful and progresive neurological disease. My RSD started in my left hand and wrist. Over the past few years it has spread full body. I manage the full body burning and pain with Ketamine Infusions in FL, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and pyhscial therapy.
There is hope that a new treatment called 'Brain Mapping' can help me control the pain. The treatment will try to identify which area inside my brain is sending the pain signals so that I can try to manage that area with different techniques.
During one of my hospital stays, the doctors did an MRI and found a Craniopharyngioma, a brain tumor located next to my pituitary gland and hypothalamus. This tumor was causing me to lose my eye sight because it was pressing on my optic nerves. Brain surgery was scheduled and after 9 hours of surgery, most of the tumor was successfully removed. But not without side affects. The sugery left me with panhypopituitarism, which means I need many medications for the rest of my life. Without them I would die. The good new is I got some of my peripheral vision back and my eyesight has stabilized. There is no longer a fear of me going blind.
I also have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), which causes: easy brusing, joints to slip out of place, and my right ankle to roll if I try to walk without my brace. Looks like I will be wearing my custom made, AFO brace for the rest of my life.
Since the surgery I have continued to suffer with RSD and EDS, as well as many complications from the surgery itself. Despite all my health issues, I'm in my second year of college at Columbia International University. I have many challeges but I press forward with God's help each day.
