COVID-19 Relief for UPA Families

Urban Promise Academy is a public school in the Fruitvale community of Oakland, CA that strives to take care of our students and families. Many of our students have recently moved to the United States and are in the process of learning English as a second (or in many cases, third!) language. In ordinary times, our beautiful community school offers food pick up, mental health services, and a health center with services available to both students and families. As we are a Title 1 school, all of our students receive free breakfast, lunch and supper at school.
We are raising relief funds to help our UPA families with basic needs during the time of Covid-19. As we all know, many people have lost work due to public health concerns and the restrictions on local businesses. Our families are among the most vulnerable at this time, as many undocumented immigrants are not eligible to apply for essential financial benefits such as Unemployment or Paid Family Leave. Many of our families are struggling to find ways to pay for food, medicine, phone service, and most of all, rent. Many of our families live in multi-family housing and therefore are often not protected by the Covid-19 Rent Moratorium in Oakland.
As a school community, we are raising money to provide the following:
1) Financial assistance to particularly vulnerable families (Homeless, disabled, single parent households, etc).
2) Financial assistance (particularly for rent) for undocumented families who are experiencing reduced or no work. Because they are undocumented, they will not qualify for unemployment insurance, and are excluded from stimulus checks.
Any amount you can contribute would be deeply appreciated. Every dollar raised will go directly to families who need support right now. For transparency, a small committee of UPA staff will disburse funds as equitably as we can to families based on their need and availability of funds.
