On Monday, January 13, 2020, our beloved friend and neighbor, Edina passed away after a long, arduous battle with cancer at the age of 46. Edina leaves behind her wonderful husband Imre(Elvis) , and two great kids: Botond, 9 and Bator, 4. Of course many people say good things about someone after they pass, but in this case, the good things are not only true, but an understatement.
She was beautiful, bold, bright, warm, fierce and authentic. She was a champion for her values, for Bator and Botond, and for what she believed was just, and leaves behind a hole in so many hearts that can never be filled. She was her husband’s rock, and the glue that held her family together.
She first diagnosed with cancer in May 2016 - right before Bator’s first birthday. Edina, being as headstrong and tenacious as we all knew her to be, was determined to beat the disease (which she referred to as “this sh!t”) not just for her own longevity, but to first and foremost, take care of her family. She resolved to fighting with everything she had.
And she did.
She battled bravely, yet silently, for years - many people not even knowing she was sick. She didn’t want or need anyone’s pity. That’s who she was. It was one of the many reasons that we loved her.
During the course of her illness, which lasted almost entirely all of Bator’s life and half of Botond’s, she tried everything from holistic medicine to chemotherapy, sometimes even travelling to other countries in search of an effective treatment. At times Edina put her treatments on hold in order to take care of her family’s needs, even when the consequences were devastating. Because that’s what moms do.
Although the cancer was spreading and the illness was debilitating, Edina kept her brave face, resolve and humor, especially for her boys. She wanted to so desperately to survive to raise her children.
When it was clear that the illness was winning, and she didn’t have much time left, Edina asked her friends to take care of her husband and children after she is gone, because she knew Elvis would never ask for help.
So WE are - her friends.
As some of you may be all painfully aware, cancer is not affordable, even with the best insurance. In the last few months, Elvis also had taken a sabbatical from work in order to care for Edina and the boys. Between the cancer treatments, flying family in, and Elvis being present for Edina and the boys, it has taken a significant financial toll on the family, and they’ve accrued an enormous amount of debt. No one should ever be in debt because of a terminal illness, and while the family grieves and struggles to put the their pieces back together, the last thing that should be on their shoulders are bills.
On behalf of Elvis (who would never ask), We, Edina’s friends, ask you to please donate what you can to help this family recover from the destruction that cancer has wrought on this beautiful family, and fulfill her final wishes. Edina’s family hopes now to take her remains back to her native Hungary.
