Riverfront Park's historic Turbine House building received a grant this year from the Richland County Conservation Commission to restore damage to our beloved red doors and beautiful arched windows.
Many of you know and love this historic waterworks site. So many photo shoots and events happen here. Make Music Day, weddings, proposals, Bierkeller Columbia.
GL Construction kicked off the project on Monday with lots of in-kind support from the City of Columbia. Park Rangers are committing hours of prep work, sanding and priming. City Parks committed thousands of dollars of matching money as well.
The pandemic has affected wood prices and the availability of contractors, but we adjusted and phased the project. This phase must be complete before the end of June. While we would love to fix all the windows and the doors, we now plan to repair the two most damaged windows on the east side.
On Tuesday, contractors began working on the arch over the south side door and found damage much worse than expected. The boards were not simply delaminated as thought, but had been consumed by termites. That arch will have to be completely rebuilt. Fortunately, the building was beautifully constructed and the brick arch is sound.
Some of the additional cost for this can be paid with money held in the Parks Foundation from our Bierkeller Columbia events. (With thanks to everyone who raised a glass during our spring and fall events!)
But we need $1250 more to get the arch rebuilt. Your contribution can help us meet that goal!
