Friends, when I started the Trading Path Preservation Association in 2000 I had little idea what it could accomplish. Since then we have learned a great deal and accomplished more than we imagined we might. We've inventoried roads and occupation sites for counties and towns and developers. We've GPSed hundreds of sites and objects and we have preserved a good deal of our common past. So, I want to wrap up my work with the TPA in a book.
The book I envisage will consist of introductory materials on why, how, and where to locate precolonial and colonial routes of commerce. Then I intend to provide a half-dozen trail tours along prehistoric and historic routes showing where to see artifacts of their heyday. And it will include a foldout map showing everything the TPA has mapped.
This is an ambitious project under the best of circumstances and the best of circumstances is in my rearview mirror as I had my one good eye damaged a couple of years ago and, after numerous surgeries and a cornea transplant I have as much vision as I will get and it is enough to do the job with a little help. I will need help with GIS work that will not be inexpensive, and I will need help paying for travel to "ground truth" and map the trails; this I estimate at 3000 miles a month's worth of traveling over a one year span.
If there is any money left over it will be spent on an end of project blowout to which you'll all be invited.
Give what you can and you know it will go to a worthy purpose.
