Tonys Escape from Alcatraz for Pieta House

Donation protected
Hi all,

So this time last year the doc advised it was time to hang up the boots, not even junior b league to see out the football days he said. He summarized it like this - you've knees of a 65 year old, gout like a 55 year old and an ankle of a 45 year old so its time to call it a day. Thankfully he never spotted that I was as daft as a 15 year old the same day !!

So pondering what to do next I said I try a spot of golf, after a few holes and not a bead of sweat I said to myself think ill leave this one off until the knees give up before settling for this life. Then as you have it an email came in to say I had been randomly drawn out to compete in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon I had entered 3 years earlier which was still rolling as I hadn't been drawn out previously. Now with no open water triathlon under the belt, dodgy knees and ankle, you would think I hit the decline button, but here is were the daftness kicks in and I hit accept!!  So on the 9th of June I set about doing probably my one and only open water triathlon in the icy cold shark infested waters of San Francisco bay.

So what is the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon you may ask and its all very simple and I imagine an enjoyable day out :-). It starts off with a leap from the San Francisco Belle boat outside Alcatraz Island and we swim for shore in the icy cold waters of San Francisco bay, from there we hop on a bike and do the hills of San Fran taking in the views as I go no doubt and then its all washed down with a nice handy 13km run through the trails of the Golden Gate recreational area. Too easy !!

Given this is a once in a life time torture experience I  think it be a missed opportunity not to try and raise a few euros for some local cause at the same time. Here is where your help comes in and everything raised will be donated to Pieta House which does untold work across the country and has helped many of us to be here today with the services they provide. Hopefully my few hours of suffering will help in someway to relieving the distress  for someone else out there.

All donations no matter how big or small will be much appreciated and should I not make it out of the waters of San Fran bay please do think of me the next time you tuck into a tin of tuna!!

Thanks in advance and now back to the balmy waters of cork for me to get ready for this madness !!!
