I am a friend of Andrea and Naima, two amazing people who spent years wishing and striving to hear the pitter patter of tiny feet at home.
Their dream came true when Lorenzo was born.
Today Lorenzo is nearly 2 years old and an adorable special little kid, but he has a rare serious disease (called tuberous sclerosis).
To explain briefly, inside his body cysts grow which impede normal growth and brain development and put pressure on his brain which provokes severe epilepsia - up to 20 attacks a day.
Even worse, this type of epilepsia is not curable or treatable with drugs.
He is unable to eat by himself, struggles to sleep, walk and play because of all of the sudden and violent seizures.
Have you ever seen an epileptic fit? Can you imagine one in a toddler?
Andrea and Naima have to attend to Lorenzo's every move 24 hours a day, and this makes their lives a continual struggle, day and night, when they can never get more than an hour or two of continuous sleep. Month after Month.
For a moment let me ask you to do something.
Close your eyes and imagine for a few seconds what it would mean for you to dedicate every minute of your life to helping your child, dealing with 20 seizures a day, draining you emotionally and financially too because you are no longer able to get out of the house and work.
No longer knowing what it means to sleep a whole night or spend a day peacefully without fear of yet another crisis.
You just feel helpless, as if you will never have the resources to meet your child's needs.
Now the fateful question: is there hope of making the situation better?
There are treatments available that might be able to stop the seizures, possibly even surgically remove the most dangerous cysts (the ones growing in the brain) and start to make this family's life more happy and calm.
There will have to be a series of treatments -both from the Italian national system and private alternatives- lasting years...
...but a new treatment for Lorenzo could start as early as December.
In just a few weeks.
It should be within reach, but it's not for Naima and Andrea because they can't afford the expenses to access it with their reduced income.
The family can't reach that point without help.
Just a few euros- for you maybe even an insignificant amount- can contribute to making Andrea, Naima and Lorenzo's family life now and in future more "liveable" ... and put a smile on your face too knowing that you have played your part in changing a life.
