Supporting Rachel’s Fight Against Liver Cancer

My name is Sa’Rhonda, and I’m raising funds to support my incredible wife, Rachel, as she battles a sudden and aggressive health emergency.

In late August, Rachel was rushed to the ER after experiencing worsening shortness of breath. There, doctors discovered a 12cm mass on her liver. We were discharged and advised to follow up with her primary care physician, who referred us to the Liver Institute in San Antonio. Unfortunately, her case was too complex for them, and we were redirected to the Liver and Tumor Center at UT Health San Antonio.

Rachel’s initial appointment was scheduled for October 27, 2025. Leading up to it, a 20-panel blood test revealed her cancer antigen levels were alarmingly high—over 2,000, compared to the normal range of around 37. At the appointment, our worst fears were confirmed: Rachel, just 32 years old, has liver cancer. In just one month, the mass had grown to 20cm, now covering the entire right and bottom sides of her liver.

Since then, we’ve made four emergency room visits due to Rachel’s excruciating pain, vomiting, and breathing difficulties. While ER staff did their best, they couldn’t provide the level of care needed for cancer-related symptoms.

At UT Health, we met with a team including a transplant surgeon, hepatologists, and a PA. They explained that a biopsy was essential to determine the cancer type—either Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) or Cholangiocarcinoma. Thankfully, additional blood tests showed no signs of the tumor spreading to other parts of her body.

The biopsy was moved up to October 31, and although we couldn’t afford the $1,785 cost, the hospital graciously allowed the procedure to proceed. We also have an outstanding balance of $251 from previous appointments.

Rachel now faces aggressive weekly chemotherapy to shrink the tumor, which is currently too large to remove without risking liver failure. Radiation may follow. Each treatment requires us to travel out of town, often staying overnight to ensure Rachel can rest and recover. These trips have exhausted all of my paid time off, and I now lose income with every visit.

Despite everything, Rachel remains a pillar of strength. She’s a devoted mother to our two-year-old daughter, a loving wife, and a selfless soul who rarely speaks of her pain. Her courage and faith inspire everyone around her.
