Nanaimo, BC has one of the highest per capita rates of people experiencing homelessness in the country. This means that as the cold weather arrives, many people are outside all day and night. Trench foot and frost bite are just two of the serious health concerns that can arise when people constantly have cold, wet feet.
As the cold weather approaches, we wanted to provide some small measure of comfort to individuals experiencing homelessness this winter season. Though having warm, dry socks is something most of us take for granted, they are essential for those who do not have an indoor space. We have created the Toasty Toes initiative to help fill that gap.
How it works
- 100% of funds raised (minus the small admin fee charged by GoFundMe) will go to purchase high-quality socks for men and women by Blue Sky, an ethical, Fair Trade company based in Vancouver.
- Flying Fish Nanaimo has offered to place the sock order on our behalf so we can receive wholesale pricing.
- The socks will then be donated to, and distributed by, the Happy Feet 911 initiative, which provides outreach on the last Friday of each month (9 am - 11 am, outside the RCMP precinct). Socks will also be dropped off to the St. Peter's winter shelter and the Unitarian Shelter.
- If we exceed our initial $1,000 goal we will simply buy more socks.
We all know that socks are not the solution to homelessness, but they are a small tangible way we can provide help this season while continuing to work for the systemic political and social change needed to address the root causes of this issue. No amount is too small and we are grateful for your donation.
Please note: We are a small group of concerned humans wanting to make a difference through quick, efficient, direct action initiatives. However, we are not a registered non-profit or charitable organization. As such, we cannot offer tax receipts for your donation.
