When They Spread Hate, We Spread Meze

On November 4th an organized hate crime targeted Cafe Istanbul in Beverly Hills. An group of masked individuals violently ransacked the restaurant and terrorized the owners and employees, leaving them deeply traumatized, with damage to property and physical injury. The owners had been receiving threats for weeks that they would “pay for” the political events unfolding half a world away in the Southern Caucasus.
A civil rights lawyer for many important Turkish-American cases, as well as other mentors to our community, have strongly encouraged SoCal Turks to put our best foot forward whenever we are faced with antagonism, and turn it into “positive reinforcement” of our community instead.
As such, members of ATASC had the idea to sponsor a “thank you feast” for public safety personnel who responded to the incident and their colleagues. This will include groups such as Beverly Hills Police Dept., Beverly Hills Fire Dept., etc. The owner of Cafe Istanbul expressed gratitude for our outreach and will coordinate with us for the effort.
We have begun working with Cafe Istanbul to determine the logistics of providing the “thank you feasts.” In the meantime, fundraising is officially open, with the target of $1,000 to purchase food from Cafe Istanbul for delivery to eager public safety recipients in their neighborhood. We will keep the fundraising open up to $2,000, with any money over the amount needed to pay for the feasts going directly to Cafe Istanbul for needed repairs.
