Many people feel that climate change is simply too big a problem for any one person to do something about. This has been called "climate helplessness." This campaign is a way to take that first step and instantly reduce power usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
For my business and my climate change cause, I use a large number of shoplight fluorescent light fixtures to grow plants year round. The lamps use a great deal of power and therefore contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Recently, more efficient LED shoplights have become much more affordable and available at retail. These LEDs work just fine for starting seeds and growing plants indoors. A replacement of one fixture will saves about 100 kwh/year. In addition, fluorescent fixtures, but not LED’s, must be disposed of as hazardous waste.
Most of the time, I use about 60 fixtures. Replacing all of my fluorescent fixtures with LED fixtures would save about 6000 kwh/year. (That's about the same as running an average house air conditioner 15 hours/day every day of the year). An inexpensive fluorescent fixture and lamps costs about $15-20, while an LED equivalent currently costs $30-35. So every increment of $35.00 received will be used to replace a fluorescent fixture with the best available LED fixture. Every fixture replaced will provide immediate energy savings of more than 100 kwh/year and a reduction in greenhouse gas production. The larger societal benefit will be to encourage others to use more energy efficient lighting. We will do this by sharing any excess fixtures and communicating through social media at the sites listed below.
