The way of sport - Lwandle, Cape Town

Ciao, mi chiamo Ranieri Salvini, ho 25 anni e vengo da Firenze. Sono laureato in psicologia e ho dedicato gran parte della mia vita allo sport, specialmente al calcio. È da un po’ di tempo che sto cercando di unire la mia passione per lo sport con i miei studi e ciò mi ha portato a fare tante esperienze formative in posti diversi. Dopo aver lavorato in Grecia in un campo rifugiati, in Brasile in progetti educativi nelle favelas adesso mi trovo a Cape Town a collaborare con l’università di Western Cape in progetti sociali nelle townships della città attraverso Opes e il Servizio Civile Universale Italiano. Ma che cos’’è una township? Come mai il Sudafrica è il paese con il più grande tasso di disuguaglianza economica al mondo? Come si può aiutare delle persone in tale stato di necessità? Queste sono le domande a cui sto cercando di rispondere da 5 mesi a questa parte e che continuano a motivarmi nel percorso che sto compiendo qua. In questo lasso di tempo sono venuto a conoscenza di una comunità dove lo sport rappresenta la vera vita e speranza. Nel centro sportivo di Lwandle ci sono palestra, campo da calcio, campo da rugby, due campi da netball e uno da calcetto. È qui che tutta la comunità, soprattutto bambini, si ritrova, per divertirsi, migliorarsi e sognare. Io faccio parte della squadra, gioco nel campionato con loro e da vicino sto scoprendo sempre di più il calore di persone che hanno così tanta voglia di mettersi in gioco che non si fermano di fronte a tutte le avversità che affrontano nella propria quotidianità. La condizione abitativa è spiegata nel link Youtube annesso, ma concretamente questi soldi che sto cercando di raccogliere servirebbero a rendere più accessibile la possibilità di fare sport in termini di: scarpe per giocare, materiale di allenamento, kit di magliette, e soprattutto aiuti per rinnovazione delle infrastrutture, il vero sogno e obiettivo è quello di riuscire a costruire un nuovo campo da calcio. Ad alcuni tornei arrivano ad esserci anche 2-3mila spettatori e il livello di talento presente in una comunità così vicina allo sport è veramente alta, la possibilità di andare nel mondo professionistico per loro è una delle uniche possibilità di ascesa sociale e di miglioramento di condizione di vita, e hanno veramente tutto il potenziale per poterci sperare. Il mio ruolo sarebbe quello di seguire strategicamente da vicino come investire al meglio questi soldi e come programmare un aiuto che possa dare più continuità possibile. I soldi arriverebbero dunque a me e insieme al management del centro capiremo come usarli al meglio. Ho già lavorato in contesti umanitari precedentemente ma mai mi sono trovato di fronte ad un contesto così, in cui nonostante i tantissimi problemi, basta veramente poco per dare possibilità e speranza a ragazzi e ragazze ricchi di talento e voglia di mettersi in gioco. Ho visto troppe volte gente presentarsi al campo scalzi con tagli nei piedi, saltare allenamenti per via degli allagamenti, smettere di giocare perchè non avevamo più palloni… So che questo aiuto può essere veramente efficace e effettivo anche nell’immediato, e io in prima persona ne farò da testimone.

Hello, my name is Ranieri Salvini, I am 25 years old and I come from Florence. I have a degree in psychology and I have dedicated most of my life to sports, especially football. It has been a while since I am trying to combine my passion for sport with my studies and this has led me to gain many experiences in different places. After working in Greece in a refugee camp, and in Brazil in educational projects in the favelas, I am now in Cape Town collaborating with the University of the Western Cape in social projects in the townships of the city through Opes and the Italian Universal Civil Service. But what is a township? How come South Africa is the country with the highest economic inequality in the world? How can people in such need be helped? These are the questions I have been trying to answer for the past five months and which continue to motivate me on my journey here. During this time, I have become aware of a community where sport represents real life and hope. At the Lwandle Sports Centre, there is a gym, a football field, a rugby field, two netball courts and a five-a-side football pitch. This is where the whole community, especially children, come together, to have fun, improve and dream. I am part of the football team of the community, I play in the league with them, and up close I am discovering more and more the warmth of people who are so willing to follow their goals that they do not allow all the adversities they face in their daily lives to stop them. The housing condition is explained in the attached Youtube link, but concretely this money I'm trying to collect would serve to make the possibility of playing sport more accessible in terms of boots for playing, training material, jersey kits, and above all aid for renovating the infrastructure, and who know. The real dream and goal is to be able to build a new football pitch. At some tournaments, there are even 2-3 thousand spectators and the level of talent present in a community so close to the sport is really high, the possibility of going into the professional world for them is one of the only possibilities for social advancement and improving their living conditions, and they have all the potential to do so. My role would be to strategically follow closely how best to invest this money and how to plan support that would give as much continuity as possible. The money would then come to me and together with the management of the centre we would work out how best to use it. I have worked in humanitarian contexts before, but I have never been faced with a context like this, where despite so many problems, very little is needed to give people with this talent and an inexhaustible desire a chance and hope. I have seen too many times that people come to the field barefoot with cuts on their feet, miss training because of flooding, and stop playing because we have no more balls... I know that this help can be really effective even in the immediate future, and I myself will witness it.
