Introduction and Overview
Hello, my name is Tom Weston. I am a Life Scout in Scout Troop 649 from Escondido California. I am raising money for my Eagle Scout Project that will benefit the Sikes Adobe House in Escondido California.   The project has been in planning since July of 2020, and is estimated to complete in March of 2021 based on the current schedule.

The project will consist of multiple construction phases to revitalize the nursery structure at the Sikes Adobe House. The construction phases and the estimated budget for each is below. The goal of my campaign is to raise $3120.00 to complete the project, thank you in advance for your contributions.

Mission of the San Digeto River Park
The mission of the San Dieguito River Park (SDRP)  is to preserve and restore land within the Focused Planning Area as a regional open space greenway and park system that protects the natural waterways and the natural and cultural resources and sensitive lands and provides compatible recreational opportunities, including water related uses, that do not damage sensitive lands. We aim to provide a continuous and coordinated system of preserved lands with a connecting corridor of walking, equestrian, and bicycle trails, encompassing the San Dieguito River Valley from the ocean to the river’s source. SDRP goals consist of preservation of open space, conservation of sensitive resources, protection of water resources, preservation of the natural floodplain, retention of agricultural uses and creation of recreational and educational opportunities.

Friends of Sikes adobe: Mission (found at http://www.sdrp.org/wordpress/sikes-adobe/friends/)
The Friends of Sikes Adobe is a small non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 2013. Their goal is to preserve and interpret the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead, a rare 19th century home, and its importance in the early San Diego North County farming community.

History of the Sikes Adobe House
The Sikes Family
Zenas Sikes and Eliza Burrell were among the earliest Americans to come to California during the gold rush. Zenas Sikes married Eliza Burrell in 1853 and settled in Santa Clara county, becoming established farmers. In 1870, they moved into San Diego county along with their six children, to settle on 2,400 acres parceled from the former Mexican land grant, rancho San Bernardo. The Sikes family turned their purchase into productive farmlands, instrumental to the growth of the town of Bernardo, and later the community of Escondido, as well as the infant city of san Diego.

Built around 1870, the Sikes Adobe historic farmstead features one of the oldest surviving structures in north san diego county, and one of the few remaining adobes in the region. The
Farmstead represents both a legacy of 19th century California and our pioneer farming history.

Located in san Diego, at the gateway to the san Pasqual valley agricultural preserve, the Sikes Adobe historic farmstead is state point of historical interest no. Sdl-013, and a registered
City of San Diego historical landmark. It is part of the San Dieguito river park, a 55-mile open space greenway and trail system that runs the length of the San Dieguito River watershed from Volcan
Mountain in Julian to the ocean at Del Mar.

The cash crop of 1880's and 1890's, was wheat. Along with other wheat farmers of San Diego county, the Sikes family shipped their "California white velvet" variety of wheat from San Diego to England. As the family's fortunes improved, the rustic adobe was expanded into a seven-room, Victorian farmhouse. A wealth of information exists about the Sikes family, their daily activities, their personal histories, their possessions and their farm implements, making the site rich with interpretive opportunities. The house is open to the public through docent tours. Our goal is to interpret the family's daily life at the farmstead, from 1870 to 1899. Informed by archaeology and research, the adobe and farmhouse were restored in 2004. Following the 2007 witch creek fire, only the adobe walls survived and the farmhouse was once again reconstructed. The farmhouse now has a reconstructed adobe creamery, as well as an interpretive orchard and kitchen gardens. Hikers can take the coast to crest trail from Sikes Adobe to nearby mule hill, the site of an 1846 Mexican-American war battle and California registered landmark.

Project Description and Phases

Below is a picture of the construction site.

Phase 1: Building and installing new shelving

In this phase we will be building new shelving for storage of loose materials that are blocking the expansion of the nursery in the Sikes Adobe House.  Their will be 2 shelving units made out of pressure treated 2 by 4's and plywood. Each unit will have three shelves, will be approximately 7 feet long and 18in deep. The two units will be painted and installed lengthwise next to each other and will be secured in the center to the existing fence already in place.

Estimated number of people needed: 6
Estimated time needed for construction: 1 weekend
Estimated phase cost is: $400

The pictures below shows the location in the worksite where the shelves will be installed.

The CAD design is below shows the two shelving units and their design minus the plywood on top.

Phase 2: Clean up corner and prep area for Phase 4

In order to renovate the nursery structure we will  move the items from this corner (the image below)  to the shelfs we built in the first phase. We will then clear the ground for construction of the extension in Phase 4.

Estimated time: 6 hours
Estimated people: 2 people
Estimated phase cost is: $50

Phase 3: Repair current nursery structure
The current nursery structure needs some repairs. We will be replacing the wood that is warped/broken with new pressure treated lumber. the repairs are needed because the wood has warped or bent from being exposed to the elements. A picture of the current nursery structure is below.

Estimated people: 4
Estimated time: 3 days
Estimated phase cost is: $320.00

below is the CAD drawing showing the current nursery structure. Note the material for the roof is not shown, this is so that you can see more of the design, the roofing material will be replaced as part of this phase.

Phase 4: Expansion of current nursery structure
The corner that was cleaned up in phase 2 is now being put to use as the area the nursery structure will extend into. The corner at this phase it would be free of junk and weeds with the extension on top of it. The extension will consist of installing additional poles and extending the roof resulting in the nursery structure being 10ft longer.

Estimated people: 4
Estimated time: 2 days
Estimated phase cost is: $340.00

CAD drawing/file is below for the expansion (note the extension is highlighted in green while the main nursery structure is blue/grey.)

Phase 5: Table expansion + Table upgrades
Inside the nursery structure volunteers work on the plants on tables. We will be taking 4 old tables and arranging them in a u shape around the perimeter of the newly expanded nursery structure. We will also make 2 new tables to fill out the missing spots in the center of the design. For all the long tables we'll be putting on new gopher wire. The smallest table will have a hard top.

Estimated people: 5
Estimated time: 4 days
Estimated phase cost is: $520.00

CAD drawing is below( the main nursery structure is also shown with the extension and table locations)

Phase 6: Water access point extension + misters + drippers
In this step we will be running PVC from the water access point across the construction site to the bottom left corner of the nursery structure.

Once the water is run to the structure we will be installing misters in the ceiling to keep the volunteers cool in the summer. The plan is to install an off the shelf mister kit for the structure with its own water valve.

the dripline will run around the outside edge of the nursery structure. The dripline has two parts, there is the supply line that runs around the structure and the driplines that connect off of it at each table to water the plants.

Estimated people: 4
Estimated time: 4 days
Estimated phase cost is: $200.00

Phase 7: chicken wire enclosing nursery structure
In this phase we will put chicken and gopher wire around the whole nursery structure to ensure no critters can get in and eat the plants the volunteers are working on. Additional two by fours will be added to help strengthen the frame of the wire. A picture of the old nursery structure is below.

Estimated people: 4
Estimated Time: 3 days
Estimated phase cost is: $320.00

The CAD drawing below shows the two by fours that will be added for attaching the gopher and chicken wire.

Phase 8: Installing the doors
In this phase we will be installing the doors that will be used to fully enclose the nursery structure in chicken wire while still allowing volunteers inside. A picture of the doors attached to the structure is below.

Estimated people: 4
Estimated time: 2 days
Estimated cost: $200.00

The Final CAD is below (each door is 5ft wide and we need to clear a space 5ft deep to make sure they open)
