The People's Attorney Needs the People's Help!

Vanessa Fluker is the "people's champion" of housing law. Her fierce advocacy has saved hundreds of families from foreclosure. Ms. Fluker represents hundreds of Detroiters in eviction proceedings who have nowhere else to go. She fights for the poor, the elderly, the disabled, and the most vulnerable families in our community to stay in their homes. She is leading the fight against predatory mortgage lending and "lease to own" scams on behalf of consumers and the community. Ms. Fluker provides legal advice and representation, mainly on a pro bono basis. Ms. Fluker is one of the rare private practice attorneys that does not allow costs to be a barrier to receiving her services.

Ms. Fluker's work has been nationally recognized. She was invited to testify before the U.S. Congress Judiciary Committee on December 15, 2010, on foreclosure issues and their effects on the community. She was asked to testify before Congress again in August of 2019. Ms. Fluker has many awards from community organizations for her work on behalf people facing housing struggles. Ms. Fluker is active with the Moratorium Now Coalition, a grassroots organization in the struggle to stop foreclosures and evictions and prevent further devastation of our communities.

Ms. Fluker has and continues to do so much for the community, now she needs our help. Ms. Fluker recently represented a Black woman who was a victim of a well-known real-estate scammer with a criminal background related to real-estate transactions. Ms. Fluker beat the motion to dismiss the appeal. However, in a bizarre turn of events, the opposing side filed a motion for reconsideration, and the court reversed its own opinion and sanctioned Ms. Fluker over $7,000 at the request of the other attorney! Now Vanessa has a week to raise this money to keep up the fight for her client's home. Ms. Fluker has always been there for us - now will you stand with her?

Some hope this will shut Vanessa down, but we can't let that happen. Vanessa Fluker is there when legal aid offices are at capacity, and there's nowhere else for poor people to turn. We need her.
