The Patricia O'Reilly Scholarship

Donation protected
Patricia O’Reilly, J.D. was a barrister and solicitor who practiced in the area of poverty law for eight years, working on behalf of injured workers. She was Assistant Professor in the Departments of Criminology and Law and Society Program at Wilfrid Laurier University, Brantford. She previously taught at Grant McEwan College, and also taught life skills to federal inmates. Patricia has also worked as a researcher for the Office of the Native Children’s Guardian in Alberta, as a community education teacher and organizer in South London, U.K., and was an activist for women’s rights, and on behalf of the homeless.

Her research interests included First Nations peoples and the law, media and crime, violence, victims’ rights, assault on workers, and the sociology of law. She was actively involved in social justice issues throughout her life.

Patricia was a devoted daughter to Mary and Rod O’Reilly, loving wife of 42 years (and latterly colleague) to Dr. Thomas Fleming, wonderful mother to Kate and her partner Simon, Patrick and his wife Hillary, & Tom and his partner Brijana, and Grandpuppy Roscoe. She was sister to Wendy, Aunt to Rachel, among many other close family connections. She was also a beloved teacher to the many students she adored, a respected colleague, and a dear friend to those she loved and supported, and who loved her. Her strong, kind spirit will be so missed.

Patricia passed away on February 5th, 2017 after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Her express wish was to be remembered for the work she did on issues she cared deeply about, and not to be defined by the disease that clouded her last months. She was a passionate supporter of her students, and it is fitting that students who share her interests should continue to be encouraged and inspired in her memory. As such, her husband and children, with the support of colleagues at Wilfrid Laurier University, have set up this scholarship fund. We envisage that the Patricia O’Reilly Social Justice Scholarship will annually support a student interested in pursuing issues of social justice, especially those intending to apply to law school or graduate studies.
