The Matses vs. Coronavirus

The Matses, an indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon, are in great danger from Coronavirus.  Their territory is very remote and the virus has not reached it, but there are 175 Matses in Iquitos, a jungle city, who are in a desperate situation. In order to not spread the virus to their families, they cannot go home so are stranded in the city. But they do not have money to buy food and medicines. Many of them are ill with Coronavirus. Some are being evicted from their hostels because they don't have enough money. The local health system is overwhelmed, and many Matses speak very little Spanish so have problems communicating with doctors. In short, they need our help.

We are raising money to buy essential food and medicine for the Matses in Iquitos. This will not only help them survive, but it will help ensure none of them are forced through hunger to return to their territory where they would risk infecting thousands of Matses with Coronavirus. This help will save many lives.

We are coordinating with Daniel Manquid Jimenez Juanan, the head of the Matses' indigenous Association and a friend of both Camilla and Paddy (english people organising this crowd-funding), and Arlen Ribeira, a local government worker who works with the Matses.  The money we raise will go directly to the Matses Association to be spent on basic necessities of food and medicine that will be given to those with the greatest need. Daniel is coordinating with the Matses and Arlen is helping with logistics. They will take photos of all the receipts and purchases they make and send them to us, and we will send a summary of accounts to donors who are interested. Both Camilla and Paddy have spent periods living with the Matses, staying with Daniel and his family, as have various other friends who are helping with this crowd-fund.  We are personal friends of Daniel, who is trusted and respected by the rest of the Matses.

Los Matses, un pueblo indígena de la Amazonia Peruana, están en peligro enorme a causa de Coronavirus. Su territorio es muy remoto y todavía el virus no ha llegado ahí, pero hay 175 Matses en Iquitos, una ciudad en la selva, quienes están en una situación terrible. Para que no contagiaran a su gente, no pueden regresar a sus hogares en la selva así que están varados en la ciudad. Pero no tienen plata ni para comida ni medicinas. Muchos están enfermos con coronavirus. Algunos se están desalojado de sus hostales por no poder pagar. El sistema de salud de Iquitos esta abrumado ya, y muchos de los Matses no hablan bien castellano y por eso tienen problemas comunicándose con los médicos. En breve, necesitan nuestro apoyo.

Estamos juntado donaciones para comprar necesidades de víveres y medicamentos para los Matses en Iquitos. Les ayudaran a sobrevivir, pero además aseguraran que el hambre no hará que uno de ellos tiene que irse a su pueblo, donde arriesgarían contagiar con coronavirus a los miles de Matses en el territorio. Nuestro apoyo salvará a muchas vidas.
