The Lucas Dobson Water Safety Campaign

Donation protected
The Lucas Dobson Water Safety Campaign is a legacy to six year old Lucas Dobson who, tragically, drowned in the River Stour on Saturday 17 August 2019.

https://www.lucasdobsonwatersafety.com/

The campaign was set up by Nathan Dobson, father of Lucas, and Peter Faulding, CEO of Specialist Group International – the search and rescue team which recovered Lucas’ body after a four day search.

As a result of funds raised – more than £10,000 - 900 lifejackets bearing Lucas’ image and campaign logo are on their way to schools across Kent for children and families to borrow whenever they are near water.

This is just the start.

We’d like to see Lucas Dobson lifejackets in every school across the UK.

We’d like to see children and families automatically borrow a lifejacket when planning a trip or day out that involves water.

We’d like to see Lucas Dobson lifejackets on every beach and waterway in the country.

But, to do this, we need your help.

A single Lucas Dobson lifejacket costs £25-£30. But even one single pound will help. Please help us if you can by donating, spreading the word and helping us to raise awareness.

Help us save lives.

In memory of Lucas.

BACKGROUND TO THE CAMPAIGN

Lucas Dobson, a beautiful 6 year old child from Deal in Kent, lost his life to the hidden dangers of the River Stour on Saturday 17th August 2019.

A joyful fun day out with family and friends quickly turned into any parents worst nightmare, when Lucas slipped and fell into the river. The strong under currents of this tidal river, that even four strong adult swimmers could not overcome, pulled Lucas under and zero visibility in the water made it impossible to rescue him.

Various emergency services were mobilised within minutes, as well as thousands of volunteers from the local communities, who gave their services and time and provide solidarity in the search for Lucas. The search continued for almost five days with specialist divers searching the river bed using sonar equipment and touch in the murky water. Lucas’ body was recovered from the river on Wednesday 21st August 2019.

Lucas’ parents and family salute everyone involved in the search and recovery of our gorgeous boy, who inspired such sorrow and love within the local communities and across the nation. We are overwhelmed and very grateful to each and everyone of you. You have given us strength in our darkest hours.

For this reason, this GoFundMe page will continue for a campaign set up as a legacy to Lucas' memory. To promote awareness of the dangers around open water, preventing this type of tragedy befalling another family.

All donations from this GoFundMe cause, going forward, will go directly to river safety awareness. Including, but not limited to, a "library ticket" scheme in schools for children to borrow a life jacket when visiting areas of open water. Warning signage along river banks explaining the unseen risks, particularly on tidal stretches. And increase the number of buoyancy aids. These safety measures are being coordinated by Lucas’ parents, Nathan and Kirsty, in consultation with the Specialist Group International Rescue team.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Ian Clark from Baltic Lifejackets for their continued support in supplying quality lifejackets to this campaign - http://baltic.se/en
