The Ida B. Wells Anti-Racist Education Project

Donation protected
We are proud to announce the founding of a new educator-activist group, from Peta Lindsay, a proud Alumni of Howard University (You know!).

We are the Ida B. Wells Education Project. Founded on June 8, 2020, in the midst of a worldwide uprising against racism.

We stand in the tradition of countless revolutionary and fearless Black women educators throughout history and it is in their honor that we hold up the name of Ida B. Wells.

We also look to other fiercely proud educators who knew that there was nothing neutral about learning in racist America: Sal Castro, Jovita Idar, W.E.B. Dubois and Mother Jones. These are our models, educators who changed history and excelled intellectually, while never giving up the struggle against racism and fighting for their student’s survival.

Our goal is to provide:

Black education for Black children

Education that engages and challenges all students to become leaders in movements for liberation

We  will prepare young people for political struggle by teaching them their history, teaching them to organize, creating a safe space for them to express themselves via arts integration and supporting them while they grow.

We have a select group of 25 the most talented, passionate and committed humanities educators and anti-racist organizers around. We are working to create high-quality, African American history lessons to be implemented in schools across the United States, as well as tools to help every educator build the movement against racism from their classroom. .

Check out this video for a sample of the kind of high-quality, culturally affirming and empowering, inquiry based education we plan to bring to schools all over the United States.

Our orientation meeting for the First Cohort of the Ida B. Wells Education Project was on Sunday, June 14, 2020. We will be meeting throughout the summer to research, write and workshop the very best Black studies curriculum that we can produce. Making tools and distributing them is part of building the movement!

I would like to offer these incredibly engaged, passionate and hard working educators a stipend for their time. Please support our project to help develop and expand Black education in schools and identity affirming education for all children across the country.

We will be announcing activities, events, clubs and trips in the future as well as showcasing truly transformative lessons from our amazing educators. This is real and it is happening. Please join us to make real change. Let's learn, grow, shine and change history together!

We must lift each other up, while holding up our kids, our history and the mighty, mighty struggle against racism!  Let’s make our young people stronger! Juntos somos fuertes!

In Solidarity,

(This beautiful artwork was made by an incredibly courageous and talented 11th grade student in Lindsay's US History class, after she did a research project on Ida B. Wells. This piece represents what the legacy of Ida's work meant to her. Like Ida, this young woman has survived much and keeps fighting. If you'd like to purchase prints of her art (please do! It's empowering!) please contact the Ida B. Wells Education Project directly).
