The Ebb Tide

                                                                   The Ebb Tide

Students from the University of The Arts London Tackle climate crisis!

The Ebb Tide is a short melancholic film set in a dystopian wasteland, which is strewn with plastic waste. Here, a disheveled man lives in perpetual isolation - until one day, a woman is washed ashore and his world as he knows it, is changed forever.

                                                                    The World

‘The characteristics of this lost and wasted environment are integral to the plot, and the characters are also are very much a part of the rubbishy scenery, so when conceptualising my designs I am attempting to create a harmonious visual style that not only satisfies the needs of the script but also adds a texture and depth to the storyline’ - Lily Huang, Production Designer, and writer.

                                                                     Our Ethos

The story encapsulates fear, hope, and the human condition; but the one theme we’d particularly like to highlight is that of environmental degradation, which is crucially relevant in today’s world as well as our story. We have sustainability and climate awareness at the heart of our entire production process!

We will be the first production from our university to focus on minimizing our production carbon footprint, which is very exciting and important to us, considering the nature of our current climate and the world of our film. This is certainly a huge creative challenge for our team but one we are ready to embark upon; we hope that our film will in some way evoke our audience's response to our planet’s current environmental crisis.

                                                                      Our Team

Our team has recently undergone BAFTA Albert training, which is a carbon literacy course in sustainability. We are focusing on offsetting and lowering our production’s carbon footprint to achieve full certification, once the production is finished. We have also gained financial support from the charity ‘Change Agents UK’ who subsidise sustainable projects run by young people.

Through the Albert+ website and case studies, the team has been able to create our own production 'Green Goals'. Some of our goals include; Purchasing pre-loved materials, no single-use plastics on set and using rechargeable batteries for all our equipment.

                                                                     Our Budget

A majority of the funds we are trying to raise will be going towards eco-friendly materials for our production designer and their ambitious designs for our set. Alongside this, the recycling and disposing of our set, once the production is finished.

We are so close to our shooting dates and have not yet reached our goal! We are raising the extra fund to take our crew to our beautiful location in Camber Sands.

The areas in which we need the most help now are travel.  A bigger travel and transport budget would open up the possibility of hiring electrical vehicles and covering train ticket costs for the entire cast and crew.

Help us get each crew member to the beach! Just £20 can transport a member of our team to the location via shared transport, subsequently lowering our carbon footprint, costing and polluting less then traveling by car.

                                                                     Thank you!

We are a team of student film-makers creating our most important film yet whilst also trying to do something a bit different. We want to lead the way in our university and industry by putting sustainability at the heart of our film-making. However, we are aware that it ends up costing more to waste less.

We are extremely grateful for any donation no matter how big or how small! However, if you are unable to support us financially please share our page.

We would also like to thank the charity ‘Change Agents UK’ for supporting and believing in our production! Helping our film become a reality.
