The Community Desk Project

The Community Desk Project was established here in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to provide young students a personal study space in the home for virtual learning and similar usage.
A problem arose during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kids working at oversized tables and desks for long periods of time is uncomfortable. In addition, these tables and desks are often shared with other family members and functions at the same time. This is disruptive to learning.
A shortage of appropriately sized desks and chairs at local retailers as well as online venues became apparent as the pandemic continued into the fall school year. Our goal is to build desks and chairs for these young learners and offer them a better environment in which to study.
We build basic desks and chairs from common boards found at any lumber store or big box home improvement store. They are assembled and sanded, ready for painting or to be decorated as the recipient sees fit.
Each desk and chair set costs around $50 in lumber and miscellaneous materials.
To date we have built 18 such desks and given them away to local students. We are hoping to raise money to purchase lumber and materials to produce an additional 30 desks to donate to the community.
We are a husband and wife team devoted to education through a lifetime career choice and volunteerism.
