The Canterbury Bike Project

Donation protected
The Canterbury Bike Project is the only not-for-profit cycling project within the South East of England.

We are helping to change the lives of people within our local community, and we need your support to continue doing this.  First, this is how we are contributing to the local community through bicycles and cycling…

- Via Student and Youth Engagement Programmes we are motivating young people through bicycle mechanics, helping to develop resilience, create self-belief and inspire further education.

- We offer free evening Workshop Sessions for the local community to drop in and learn basic bicycle mechanics.

- Recognised as a 'Park Tool' School and approved to deliver City & Guilds qualifications, we offer a number of specialist Courses & Qualifications, supporting personal development within the community.

- We gratefully receive bike donations from our supporters, which are refurbished and given back to the community by either low cost sales or long term free loan.

- To improve confidence and social engagement within the local community of cyclists we offer Guided Rides in small groups, supported by the British Cycling.

- We also offer hugely discounted bike repairs where we don't charge for our time, only for essential parts used. By doing this we hope more bikes will be maintained, kept safe, and ultimately used.

During the restrictions of Covid-19 we have been over-run with requests for repairs. People in the local community are keen to dig out their bikes and get cycling again.  As we haven't been able to offer any sessions that require social contact we have been able to focus on getting more people on bikes for less by repairing their bike.

In the first 3 months of lockdown we were able to,
- Repair over 250 bikes.
- Offer over 150 free repairs for low income families.
- Completed over 60 free safety checks.
- Given 26 bikes on long term loan to NHS staff, with another 16 out with members of the community to help reduce social isolation.
- And we have supported a local charity with over 65 bikes that have been sent to Africa.

It's amazing to know we have helped so many people to cycle during the Covid-19 lockdown. As a team we are extremely proud of what we have achieved during this difficult time.

All great news, right? Well, here's where our problem begins.

We will shortly be opening back up to offer the Workshop Sessions, and Student and Youth Engagement Sessions.  However we really want to be able to continue offering the FREE repair service to all that need it in the local community.  To do this we need to expand and to expand we need more money.

Our volunteers put in a wonderful amount of time and effort, and they truly make the project what it is.  Without them we would not be able to offer so much to the local community. However they can only do so much, and that is why we are asking for support from you. Your support will help move the Canterbury Bike Project to the next level. To continue offering all to the services listed above at either no cost, or low cost to the customer.

Ultimately your help will mean we can offer more to more of our community! More bikes being used for exercise and commuting. More owners able to repair bikes themselves. More confidence in members of the local community to get out on their bikes. More young people engaged, improving their life skills and life chances.

If you'd like to know more about any of the services we offer, head to our website  or Facebook page , or message us.

Thank you for your time,

      Steve, Matt, Michael, Vicky, Will.

Working to improve the life chances of young people and help the community.
