The Glen Rock PBA is proud to once again participate in 'No Shave November'. This is an annual fundraising and awareness effort during which participants from around the world, including many law enforcement agencies, have put down their razors to join the fight against cancer. This year's mission is dedicated to raising funds to benefit a family with strong Glen Rock ties, the Tenga Family:
Glen Rock has been a part of the Tenga’s lives for years. This town holds a special place in both of their hearts. In 2000 Doug and Diane first met wile teaching at Central School. They started as friends and quickly fell in love. They got married in 2006 with Doug’s then 5th grade class in attendance at the church. They have continued to teach in Glen Rock for the next 24 years. Diane is the Reading Specialist at Central School and Doug is now the technology teacher at the Middle School. Throughout the last 20 years you're also sure to have seen Doug coaching the football team under the Friday night lights. But Glen Rock runs even deeper for Diane, she grew up in Glen Rock and is a proud graduate of Glen Rock High School. Her father still proudly lives in their family home for the past 60 years!
Over the summer, Doug and Diane’s 15-year-old daughter, Reese, was diagnosed with uveal melanomas in her left eye. This is a very rare form of cancer, especially for a 15-year-old. She was told to seek immediate medical attention from an ocular oncologist. When the specialist in NYC couldn't help them, they turned to another specialist in Philadelphia. There Reese underwent 2 surgeries on her eye. First, radiation seeds were placed directly on the eye and targeted the cancer. They spent the next week in Philly to let the radiation do its job. Reese then had the second surgery to remove the radiation seeds. It has been slowly healing for the past few months and continues to improve every day. Unfortunately, they will not know if the radiation killed the cancer until they meet with the surgeon again in December. Even after that, Reese’s journey will continue for years to come. This form of uveal melanoma can metastasize in the liver and lungs. She will need to undergo regular MRI and CAT scans bi-annually to check for spread.
Reese’s bravery and strength continue to amaze her friends and family. This is a strong testament to her outstanding character. Although her journey is not yet over, her smile continues to be bright. She aspires to one day work in the medical field and will help others in their quest to live a happy and healthy life.
The whole Tenga family continues to be amazed at the love, support, and generosity of the Glen Rock community.
