TEAM WILDEBEEST/JDRF Nov diabetes mo.

Nov 14th is World Diabetes Day. For November, TEAM WILDEBEEST is challenging anyone and everyone to do 80 reps of a movement on Nov. 14th 2013 to symbolize the 80 people who are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes per day in the U.S. The 80 could be pushups, pullups, burpees, squats ect. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas. These cells "” called beta cells "” normally produce insulin, a hormone that helps the body move the glucose contained in food into cells throughout the body, which use it for energy. But when the beta cells are destroyed, no insulin can be produced, and the glucose stays in the blood instead, where it can cause serious damage to all the organ systems of the body. For this reason, people with type 1 diabetes must take insulin in order to stay alive. This means undergoing multiple injections daily, or having insulin delivered through an insulin pump, and testing their blood sugar by pricking their fingers for blood six or more times a day. People with diabetes must also carefully balance their food intake and their exercise to regulate their blood sugar levels, in an attempt to avoid hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemic (high blood sugar) reactions, which can be life threatening.
TEAM WILDEBEEST is a team of type 1 diabetics that compete in CrossFit competitions. We have our first four person team competition January 18th called Team Superfit in DE. This will be the first time that any team in a CrossFit competition will be made up of all type 1 diabetics. Kirez Reynolds from Hammer CrossFit (AZ), Sarah Burkett from Colonial CrossFit (VA), Tim Carroll from CrossFit 908(NJ) and Catherine Cochran fromCrossFit Chantilly (VA) will all be coming together to compete as TEAM WILDEBEEST. We hope this will be the start of TEAM WILDEBEEST to have other type 1 athletes compete together in CrossFit. Our mission is to inspire and educate children, teenagers and adults that have type 1 diabetes. Team JDRF will be attending Team Superfit and cheering us on during the big event. We are accepting donations to help with our travel logistics and JDRF charity. JDRF is a non profit that raises money to find a cure.
Please help us on our mission to showing all type 1 diabetics that they can be STRONG.

Enjoy the challenge!
