#TeamArchie Fighting Hepatoblastoma Liver Cancer

Donation protected

On Friday 24th January 2020, 2-year-old Archie was sent to Nottingham’s QMC hospital after being treated for what they were told was a viral infection for 10 days. His parents, Lucy and Mikey, were told that Archie has a mass in his tiny tummy measuring 12cm by 8cm which is causing his liver to be pushed down into his groin, after a number of tests it was confirmed that Archie’s cancer is Hepatoblastoma (HB) which is a very rare form of cancer affecting between 5-10 children a year, aged below 3 years old, something that some doctors will never see in their whole medical career.

Archie has pretext stage 3 which is a single cancer affecting three quadrants of his liver.

A Hickman line (wiggles) which is a central venous catheter was inserted into Archie’s chest, this is to keep Archie comfortable rather than having to keep giving him needles, through this line the doctors are able to administer things such as chemotherapy, medication and also withdraw blood for analysis.

Following further tests on Friday 31st January both Lucy and Mikey were told some devastating news that the cancer had spread to Archie’s lungs, doctors decided to act quickly and administer the first lot of chemotherapy, this will be given every week for three weeks, then he will have a week break, with his final date being Friday 10th April, once this has been completed Archie will undergo more tests to see if the cancer has shrunk, if this is the case then he will have surgery to try and remove the cancer, from here he will have to have a further round of chemotherapy, treatment after this stage is yet to be confirmed.

As this form of cancer is very rare both Lucy and Mikey have agreed to take part in the PHITT trial run by the University Of Birmingham to help improve the treatment and outcome of children with Hepatoblastoma (HB). With Archie being part of the trial, he is patient number 117 of the 300 people that are needed for this trial which began in 2018.

We are trying to raise money to help relieve some of the financial strain for Lucy and Mikey as they support Archie on this very long road to recovery. The money raised is helping them with travel costs, paying bills and taking time off work to be with Archie day and night.

As well as the great care that the staff are providing for Archie on E39, both Lucy and Mikey are being supported by a wonderful charity called CLIC SARGENT who help families going through cancer treatment.

If you are able to spare some change, no matter how small, it would go a long way in helping Archie’s family.
