I hope you are safe, well and in good spirits in these strange and difficult times.
As many of you may know, Sheer Rocks and Catherine’s Café, like most restaurants throughout the World, closed their doors as our little slice of paradise began to feel the effects of COVID - 19. Although we still have very few cases, Antigua made the sensible decision to close the borders to protect the population and reduce the spread.
Soon afterwards a curfew was put in place meaning 70 of our fabulous staff employed by Rocks Group - between Sheer Rocks, Catherine’s Café, Rocks Group Events and Urchin Atelier - had to be laid off. Anyone who knows us and the team will appreciate just how difficult this task was. Our firm hope is of course that once it is safe for our borders to re-open and tourists return to our shores, we will be in a position to reinstate the very same spectacular team.
In the meantime, however, the reality is hard-hitting: those who are now unemployed are experiencing testing financial times and although the government is doing what it can, where it can, the island simply does not have the resources to provide essential financial support for its population.
Rocks Group is doing what it can to support the team and keep the business healthy so they all have jobs to return to and you have fabulous restaurants to visit again one day soon. With this in mind – and perhaps while some of you are beginning to dream of holidays in the sun and better days ahead – I am trying to put some funds together to help support the Rocks Group Team here and now. Anything you can donate towards food and necessities for those who have been laid off to make life a little easier for them and their families would be very greatly appreciated.
With our buying power on island and the support of our wonderful vendors we estimate that just £20 can feed a staff member and their family for a week.
For the team who works so hard to take care of us, I thought I would reach out for your help to take care of them, just this once. The whole team are sending warm wishes across the ocean to wherever you may be, in the hope that our lives will soon reconnect and return to some version of normality.
