“It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. it cannot be taken from you, not by angles or demons, heaven or hell.” –Buddha

Take a moment and try to think of your thoughts, hopes and aspirations when you were sixteen years old.

My godson, Gavriel Tavius Bendeck, just turned sixteen (10/25/16) and is a sophomore attending Reseda High School.  Not only was he enrolled in AP/ Honors classes, he was also an athlete with aspirations of going to university with a promising basketball scholarship. He wanted to go to school, play his favorite sport, and gain a degree in Agriculture or similar field.

In an unexpected turn of events, Gavriel has just begun home schooling and will now face the biggest obstacle of his life.

This past Mother’s Day we noticed that Gavriel had a huge lump on his neck. My sister was quick to take him to the doctor the very next day as any concerned parent would. After six months of wild goose chases with Facey Medical group, she sought a second opinion at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.  To our dismay, and completely out of left field, it turns our Gavriel has Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that has spread from his neck, through his chest, and into his spleen. Immediately after the scan, he was scheduled for a bone marrow biopsy and a PICC line (catheter in his arm through his blood stream into his chest) was inserted to receive chemotherapy. His second round of chemo was on his sixteenth birthday, October 25.

Now, I don't have children of my own, but this is my godson, my sisters first born child, and I will be dammed if I don't do whatever I can in my power to help. I’m trying to hold back the tears as I type this, as the burden of cancer isn't only his to carry. Gavriel’s father does HVAC work and my sister is a County of Los Angeles employee, currently on FMLA to provide constant care, keeping medicine schedules, cleaning the catheter, and handling all the other details of dealing with this terrible disease. Their reality now is a family of four, formally double income, now a single income family plus hospital bills, lost wages, mortgage, and a really messed up situation.

The ask alone for monitory help is heartbreaking in itself; however, any form of support - prayers, good vibes and/or sharing this on social media for people looking to donate would be eternally appreciated by my entire family. Thank you all for your support and God bless!
