Taos supports Deming New Mexico

The small town of Deming in southern New Mexico declared a state  of emergency in mid May, as they became overwhelmed by the massive task  of  feeding  and sheltering the large numbers of refugees being dropped off in their town  by border patrol agents. Deming is a 6 hour drive from Taos and is home to  about 14,000 residents, located in one of the poorest counties in New Mexico. While the governor has sharply criticized this  action by the Border Patrol, the people of Deming  are heroically managing the situation as best they can on their own. They are also assisting the refuges in their quest to find more permanent living situations beyond New Mexico, and are driving refugees to the El Paso airport 90 minutes from Deming.

While there is a long list of daily essentials requested for donations like  soap, toothbrushes, socks and t-shirts, we have chosen to raise funds  specifically for  outfitting  the Deming shelter with an outdoor kitchen. We are purchasing and  accepting donations of larger items like a  commercial stove, washer/dryer and  refrigerator, We are in close contact with the volunteer coordinator in Deming who is keeping us appraised of the shelter's needs which can change on a daily basis. on July 17th we leave for for Deming to deliver appliances and to purchase whatever else they may need.
