TAKEOVER Skateboarding

We LOVE skateboarding. Skateboarding allows us to grow into ourselves, it gives space for healing, it offers close friendships and community. But we know that the industry is still exclusive and has its gaps and shortcomings. We do not want to continue seeing Black and Indigenous people (particularly women, trans, and queer folks) being pushed out of skateboarding because they don’t feel there is a place for them. Too many people aren’t being represented within mainstream skateboarding and we want to start seeing changes for all of us.
Diversifying the scene benefits everyone with a genuine love for this community and for skateboarding.

Takeover Skateboarding is a BIPOC, LGBTQ+ & 2S, and women-centered community movement led by two BIPOC women. We are creating a safe space for those who have historically been and are currently marginalized and underrepresented within skateboarding. We aim to offer and encourage peer learning and support both in skateboarding and beyond. Fostering play is our act of resistance, we are using skating and art as vehicles for radical conversations and movements. Our work is to encourage BIPOC youth to engage in fun and radical joy, to offer them space and safety to explore their own identities and interests. Through community donations, we are able to make accessible boards, gear, and clothing to those with less income security. By supporting this fund, you are supporting us in our continuous work to make skateboarding a more accessible, safe, and fun environment for everybody! We have offered art and educational workshops, as well as skateboarding meetups for marginalized skaters to explore and learn in a safe and encouraging environment. Through this Pandemic, we hope to keep our vibrant community connected and engaged in skateboarding and art. This funding will allow us to continue creating programming and educational content aimed at youth and beyond. We acknowledge we don’t currently see our peers or youth represented and given opportunities; we hope to offer these opportunities ourselves for youth talent in our communities. We want to highlight the creativity and talent of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ & Two-Spirit young artists while paying them for their knowledge, time, and skillsets. Circular and connection-based education mean valuing lived experiences and lived and imbedded knowledge above all else, and that sharing that knowledge should never go uncompensated.

We want to emphasize the importance of acknowledging the peoples whose land we have the opportunity and privilege to do this work upon “Vancouver”, the ancestral, unceded (stolen) territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) peoples.

Ki Nâskoumitin, Thank you so much for reading through. We are deeply grateful for the support of our networks of friends. Please share as much and as widely as possible and donate if you have the means to contribute. Community care is the future.
