Hello! My name is Rhia and I am the founder and editor of Potluck Zine, a newly launched publication that shares stories on the importance of cooking, eating and sharing food together. We really love everything to do with food, but we’re very aware that some people don’t have the luxury of being able to enjoy the process of cooking and eating as much as we can. For many, having any food to eat at all is a luxury.

Everyone should be able to afford to eat and we want to help make that possible. As our first issue is just about to come out and the theme is the impact that the Coronavirus pandemic had on our food habits, we have decided to offer digital copies of the magazine as a thank you for a £10 donation to the Trussell Trust (who help run the majority of the UK’s food banks) to help keep them going.

Food bank usage in the UK has been steadily increasing year on year, but the Coronavirus pandemic and introduction of the UK lockdown on the 23rd of March had a huge impact on the amount of people who needed their help. As businesses closed their doors for an indefinite period, people lost their jobs and fell through the cracks of government support. Consequently, food banks in communities across the UK saw the demand for their help skyrocket. In the first week of lockdown, the Trussell Trust issued 50,000 food packs across the country, almost double what they’d done the year previous.

If you need a visual to help you see how in demand that is, just take a look at this video that Billy McGranaghan, the manager of Dad’s House (a London based food bank), shared of the queues into his building.

And it wasn’t just in the initial two week rush to stockpile that saw people needing the extra support. Almost three months after lockdown was announced, the Independent found that one in four adults in the UK are struggling to afford food during the ongoing pandemic. The effects of food poverty caused by coronavirus will be felt for months, if not years to come.

Facts like this can so often sound like just numbers, but behind every pack given out is an individual, couple or family in need. And it could have happened to any of us; so many of the people claiming the support never thought they’d be the ones needing to use the service. An NHS worker, a family who used to make weekly £50 donations to their local Food Bank, a TV and Film freelancer, a self employed mother, all needed their help. They’ve been a godsend to those who need them during this incredibly stressful time.

Potluck was founded on the idea that food is for everyone to enjoy and we want to do all we can to allow people to feed themselves. Our first issue is 84 pages long, with contributions from over 20 talented writers, poets and illustrators from all over the UK. It’s a really diverse mix of writing; personal stories, think pieces and recipes; that document how lockdown fundamentally changed the way we cook, eat and share food.

If you can, please consider donating.

 Here’s how it works:

1. You’ll donate a minimum of £10
2. I’ll send you a thank you email that contains a link. The link takes you to We Transfer and will give you a link to download a PDF copy of the zine
3. Click the link and download the zine
4. Read and enjoy!

Here’s some more details:

1. A minimum of £10 will need to be donated for you to receive a digital copy of the zine. You’re more than welcome to donate less than that if you just want to support the Trussell Trust, but you wont receive the zine download link.
2. There are a very limited number of physical copies available too. You don’t have to donate more for these, but they will only be available on a first come first serve basis. If you’d prefer a physical copy, send an email to [email redacted].uk with a screenshot of your donation and we’ll see what we can do about getting one for you.
3. The process of you receiving your digital download of the zine is not instant; I have to manually send the link through to you in a thank you message. I’ll be working as fast as I can, but if for any reason it’s been a couple of days and you haven’t heard anything, please just email [email redacted].uk and I’ll do my best to get it sorted.
4. If for any reason a PDF won’t work on the device you’re trying to read it on, let me know and I’ll sort it out into a file type that works for you.
