Syrian refugee sisters, handicapped, need car
Tax deductible
I watched the inseparable little sisters Zeinab and Kholoud play when we visited Syria many years ago. Now adults, Kholoud suffers from a terrible bone condition that has bent her over, and is confined to a wheelchair. The sisters have been resettled in Salt Lake City UT by the US government, after a terrible war made more than half the Syrian population homeless and refugees.
They need our help to purchase a car so Zeinab's husband Hanna can drive Uber and support the family.
During the recent war in Syria, the sisters were separated, but Zeinab found a way to smuggle her handicapped sister - in her wheelchair - out to safety.
Zeinab spends her mornings pushing her sister's wheelchair eight blocks to the bus stop, and then on to her medical appointments. In the afternoons she works an 8 hour shift, earning $10 an hour.
Hanna had supported his family all the past war years while they waited for approval from the United Nations, but now, at age 50, he cannot work the usual entry-level jobs that are labor intense, such as moving heavy boxes in a warehouse.
With only two months in the US, he has already obtained his preliminary drivers license. Our goal is to buy a car so that he can drive Uber, and the two working adults will be able to support their family.
