Slant Swinging Bridge
Donation protected
On 3/5/2015 there was a massive flood on the Clinch River in southwest Virginia. This flood carried some large, uprooted trees down the river that demolished our beloved Swinging Bridge, aka footbridge. This historical landmark has been standing since 1977. There has been a bridge in this spot for over 100 years. This was one of the last of it's kind, it was the longest at 410 ft long and has the easiest access on each side. The history from this bridge spreads across the country. Later in March we started a petition and had 1611 signatures by April 1, 2015 to present to the Scott County Board of Supervisors to request they vote for a resolution in support of rebuilding our bridge. The vote was unanimous in support, however, Virginia Department of Transportation, VDOT, states that no funds are available for a project such as this. This story was aired on all local news programs, all local newspapers multiple times. We had supporters from Alaska to Maine! Moving forward a few months, VDOT has came forth with a plan to rebuild the bridge exactly the way it was! However, they will only pay for half of it. We must raise the other half by July 1st 2016. Once we have raised the money construction can begin!! Please help us rebuild our beloved Swinging Bridge!
