On average, there are 500 amputations a day in the United States. Many people have been touched by amputation, whether they personally are experiencing limb loss or are watching a friend or family member live with it. In fact, the Amputee Coalition of America estimates that there are 2 million amputees currently living in the U.S.
Why the need for S.W.A.A.M.P
There are about eight support groups for amputees in the Atlanta area, none of which are located close to southwest Atlanta. Limb loss affects African Americans and people from underserved communities disproportionately, which is why we started the Southwest Atlanta Amputee Community a.k.a. SWAAMP. It was created by Southwest Atlanta natives, amputee Ed Hughes and Courtney Shelf PT, DPT, after a 2015 Amputee Coalition National Conference. SWAAMP currently provides a monthly support group open to amputees, their families, and anyone who has been touched by limb difference. The purpose is to offer assistance and support to new amputees, and their loved ones as they adjust to the changes they are facing.
Why we need your help
SWAAMP is seeking to expand to create a nonprofit, the Southwest Atlanta Amputee Foundation. The Foundation will further our efforts help new amputtees become their own advocates, as well as to better support an underserved segment of the Atlanta amputee community by creating a bedside peer visitor program.

Initially, the money will help with administrative costs to help launch the organization: incorporation fees, promotional materials, and startup costs associated with a nonprofit.
