Susan's moving and legal fees
Beschermde donatie
Hello. I’ve been a friend of Susan’s since grad school and I have her permission to set up this GoFundMe on her behalf. Some of you are aware of the tremendous difficulties Susan has been facing recently with her health and her housing situation and have kindly expressed a desire to help out. My hope is that we can collectively raise some funds to help out with some of her moving and legal fees, though any amount we can raise here will be only a small portion of what she has lost.
As many of you know, Susan has faced some serious health setbacks over the past few years. She recently spent many months in hospital and still requires daily assistance with basic household tasks. A few months ago, Susan hired a contractor to help make her current home more accessible for someone with her physical limitations. The contractor took the money but abandoned the job, leaving Susan in a house with the kitchen torn out, a bedroom without a floor, and a gaping hole in the back of the house (see photos). I recently visited Susan when passing through Hamilton and was shocked at the unsafe and frankly unlivable condition in which the contractor left her home. The work was supposed to be completed well before Susan’s mortgage was up for renewal in July, but because the house was left in such poor condition, a new mortgage was not possible, and Susan had no choice but to sell her home ‘as is’ for a much lower price than she would have before the contractor got involved.
Susan is pursuing legal action, but the process is slow and potentially very expensive (she has been told legal expenses could be anywhere from $2,200 to $41,000). Even though she has a strong case, it could take years to resolve, and it’s unlikely she will be able to recover anything close to what she has lost. Susan now has no choice but to move and is looking hard for a new place to live, but it is proving to be extremely difficult to find accessible housing to buy or to rent in her price range. While moving is expensive, exhausting, and stressful for everyone, it is even more so for Susan due to her disability. I hope that we can help make this horrible experience a little more manageable by helping out with some of the many expenses involved in moving and pursuing legal action. Thank you in advance for any contribution you are able to make.
