Surmang Water Project

Donation protected
This summer I will be making the journey of a lifetime to Surmang Township, a tiny village in China that is 97% ethnic Tibetan. There is just one problem: WATER.

The village is having a celebration and consecration (blessing) of an important monastery that has been rebuilt. They will have to provide enough running water to serve several thousand visitors coming for the festivities.

Surmang is ultra-poor, with a water system that is already in disrepair and overtaxed by the few hundred year-round residents and monks that it serves. There is urgent need for expansion and improvement, both for the summer's events as well as to serve the community for years to come.

By the lottery of where I happened to be born on this planet, I have been given privilege beyond measure. I have never had to worry about having running water, proper plumbing and sanitation in my life. My wish is for others to be able to experience the security that comes with having dependable access to such a basic necessity of life.

Please help bring the gift of water to Surmang this summer. There are two organizations working together to build the new water system: the Konchok Foundation and the Tibetan Village Project (see below for more details about these organizations). They estimate that the total amount needed to fully fund a high quality new water system is $23,000. It is hoped that half of this money can be raised online by individual donors by the end of May 2018 in order to get the project started.

I feel blessed to have the financial means to attend this monastery consecration, and am not asking for any money for my personal travel expenses. All money donated here (minus GoFundMe's transaction fee) will go directly towards funding this water project, and a receipt for your tax-deductible donation can be provided.

Your donation will help pay for:
- Building three water storage tanks. These will be located at the water source (a mountain stream) and within the village.
- Purchasing and installing piping such that it does not freeze during the frigid winters. The pipe must be laid deep enough to be below the frost line.
- Hiring a bobcat for digging trenches.
- Delivering all project materials the lengthy distance from Xining City.

If you would like to more details about this project,  please contact Tamdin Wangdu at the Tibetan Village Project.

The Konchok Foundation's mission is to "help meet the spiritual, cultural, educational and humanitarian needs of the Tibetan people in Surmang and elsewhere in eastern Tibet."

The Tibetan Village Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to "create sustainable livelihoods for Tibetans through social entrepreneurship and educational opportunities." They also engage in service projects which "improve the livelihood of farmers and nomads in rural communities by supporting essential needs such as health and hygiene, dentistry, and water and sanitation."
