Surf to Save: 500 waves for lives

Hi, my name is Lucia Munoz and on February 4th 2025 it will be the 5-year anniversary of my mother’s passing due to suicide, a mother who deeply struggled with mental health issues and a long lasting battle with addiction.

With this date approaching, I reflected on how I would like to honor the memory of my mother while simaltaneously raising awareness to destigamize mental health and suicide in Spain. What came to my mind was my childhood by the sea and my personal solace & healing I found in the ocean through surfing. So, I came up with the idea to pledge to surf 500 waves from November 1, 2024 up till February 4, 2025 and use this challenge to donate all the money raised to “STOP Suicidos” an organization dedicated to reduce suicides in Spain and change the stigma around this topic.

I think it’s time to generate change and open a conversation about Suicide and Mental Health in Spain, bringing awareness to shed light on such an important topic which affects us all as individuals or as a community. Whilst the rest of the EU deems mental health and suicide prevention as a social emergency - Spain treats mental health as taboo topic. Spain faces a lack of national plan, ONGs, shortage health personnel and funding in the health system, lack of information and education to the general public and overall government support which all result in contributing factors to a health crisis.

With this to reflect, I encourage you to also challenge yourself and pledge to some kind of activity that brings you mental solace (walking, biking, swimming, surfing etc) and join my challenge.

Hola, mi nombre es Lucía Muñoz y el 4 de febrero de 2025 se cumplirá el quinto aniversario del fallecimiento de mi madre por suicidio, una madre que luchó profundamente con problemas de salud mental y una batalla duradera contra la adicción.

Con esta fecha acercándose, reflexioné sobre cómo me gustaría honrar la memoria de mi madre y al mismo tiempo concienciar para desmitificar la salud mental y el suicidio en España. Lo que me vino a la mente fue mi infancia junto al mar y mi paz encontrada a través del mar y el surf, y esto ha hecho que me comprometa a surfear 500 olas desde el 1 de noviembre de 2024 hasta el 4 de febrero de 2025. Con este desafío, pretendo donar todo el dinero recaudado a “STOP Suicidos”, una organización dedicada a reducir los suicidios en España y cambiar el estigma en torno a este tema.

"España tiene una historia de condena y vergüenza hacia el suicidio, lo que contribuye a una dañina cultura del silencio" (S.Nortes 2019).

Creo que es hora de provocar un cambio y abrir una conversación sobre suicidio y salud mental en España, generando conciencia para arrojar luz sobre un tema tan importante que nos afecta a todos como individuos y como comunidad. Mientras que el resto de la UE considera la salud mental y la prevención del suicidio una emergencia social, España trata la salud mental como un tema tabú. Nuestro país se enfrenta a la falta de un plan nacional, ONGs, escasez de personal sanitario y de financiación, falta de información y educación sobre este asunto y falta de apoyo general de las autoridades publicas, lo que contribuye al gran problema sanitario en la que nos encontramos hoy en día en este aspecto.

Con esta reflexión, te animo a que también te desafíes y te comprometas a realizar algún tipo de actividad que te brinde bienestar mental (caminar, andar en bicicleta, nadar, surfear, etc.), unirte a mi desafío y ser valiente para hablar sobre temas difíciles.
