Supporting Sri Lankan Families During Covid-19

Donation protected
We are fundraising for families in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province affected by the ongoing national lockdown.

This is not the first time that Trincomalee has suffered. It was badly affected by the civil war here in Sri Lanka. Over the last few years, the community has been able to get back on its feet through tourism.

Now, as the whole world reels from the spread of Covid-19, the Sri Lankan government have wisely imposed a strict curfew for everyone's safety. But this leaves thousands of families without a daily income.

The curfew renders the entire population (except essential services) at home. While community support is strong right now, as Covid-19 takes its hold here, the ability to support each other locally will decrease.

Those who work in tourism are left stranded without work, potentially for months, as hotels are closed and arrival flights have been stopped.

Due to the location of Trincomalee, there are still many war widows and families struggling without male family members to support them. Those mothers who do make a living, now can’t. They also face a higher risk of theft and attacks as poverty takes its grip of the area. Particularly with regard to menstrual hygiene, woman and young girls are suffering more than ever due to the high cost of sanitary items in Sri Lanka - often having to choose between them and food for their families.

We know that everyone across the world is struggling right now. We thank you for reading so far and we ask this - can you afford a small donation? If so, it will be a huge support to families here.  Many people were already living hand to mouth before the virus came. This latest development is nothing short of devastating.

We hope that together we can give some support and hope to these women during this dark period.

How will it work?

Priority will be given to families of female daily wage workers who will be identified by the local Grama Niladhari (village headman) and distributed by risk factor.

Our target amount of 2000 GBP would allow us to support approximately 100 families for a 2-3 week period. A donation of £20 (4500 rupees) would allow us to provide female-led families with the below packages for 2 weeks consumption:

Dry rations (rice, daal, canned fish, soya meat, onions, potatoes, coconut, crackers, dried spices, milk powder, tea, sugar, rusks, cooking oil)
Sanitary items (pads, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, baby milk)

Other reasons to support:

- Approximately 3 million of Sri Lanka’s working population survive on a daily wage - labourers, fisherman, drivers etc.

- There are also many families with members working in the Gulf, who are now left without payment themselves or have had their employment terminated as Covid-19 takes effect in the Middle East.
