Supporting our Future Black Lawyers Institute 2022
A staff of 20 people are building a new pipeline, one that makes the school-to-prison pipeline obsolete.
JustUs System, Inc is having it’s 7th annual Future Black Lawyers summer camp.
The summer camp is a free, kinesthetic learning experience for students in the community. Students learn how to make change in their communities & how to become a lawyer from Black judges, sports lawyers, and law students. Each student argues in an actual court house and participates in a full mock trial. This year, we are offering our campers suits for the mock trial.
Mission:
Antiracist Attorney and Legal Analyst, Natasha M. Scruggs started this law camp in 2016 to help solve the Black legal crisis in Missouri. Missouri has had national attention due to police brutality, mass incarceration, & discrimination.
2022 Camp Cases:
This year, the students are tackling sports law cases:
Brian Flores v. NFL
National Collegiate Athletic Association v. Alston
Missouri Court of Appeals judge, the Honorable Judge Lisa White Hardwick and two additional Black judges will hear arguments from the students.
This year, we are training 100 students to become law school applicants. Currently, %9 of all lawyers are Black & 4.5% are Black women.
Overview:
The camp will operate from during the Summer of 2022.
Kansas City Monday - Thursday June 27-30, 2022.
St. Louis Monday - Thursday July 18-21, 2022.
$1,000 sponsors each camper. Sponsorship includes the following:
- Facility Cost $1,500
- Videographer $7,500
- Equipment Cost $20,000
- Tee Shirts and Suits for court $11,000
- Charter Buses $5,000
- Meals $8,000
- Course Writing and Register $6,000
- Lawyer Graduation $3,000
- Lawyer Life Box $3,000
- Camp Administrative Staff $35,000
