Support the Queer Community In Kakuma Refugee Camp

Hey everyone, I'm Leila and I am fundraising for the Queer Community In Kakuma Refugee Camp. I've had the pleasure of getting to know them all through video chat and messaging. They are unable to make a GoFundMe in Kenya. Here is a message from the group detailing their daily life and struggles as out and proud individuals in Kenya:

"We represent a united coalition of LGBTIQ+ refugees residing in Block 6 of Kakuma, Kenya. Within the context of Kenya's reputation as a country of asylum, individuals who have experienced violence, torture, and discrimination seek refuge here, awaiting resettlement to a safer third country. Regrettably, we find ourselves trapped in this location, facing unimaginable levels of torture and abuse that surpass the persecution we originally fled. In Kenya, being LGBTIQ+ is a grave offense that carries severe consequences, including death or imprisonment. To exacerbate matters, the pervasive corruption within the government, police, and relevant agencies has resulted in a profound lack of support and assistance, leaving us vulnerable.

Among our daily challenges are the scarcity of food, inadequate water supply, and limited access to proper medical services. Moreover, we encounter substantial homophobia from our fellow non-LGBTIQ+ refugees. Despite our best efforts to maintain a low profile, we refuse to live inauthentic lives or pretend to be someone we are not.

For LGBTIQ+ individuals like us, finding employment, particularly within the camp, proves to be an insurmountable obstacle. Our children face significant risks and cannot safely integrate into the wider community or attend school.

In light of these pressing circumstances, we fervently appeal for support and assistance. We implore compassionate individuals, organizations, and institutions to extend their aid to all LGBTIQ+ individuals in Kakuma who struggle to meet their basic needs, such as access to medication, food services, shelter, educational supplies, and sanitary pads for women and girls.

To effect lasting change, we urgently call upon the United Nations and UNHCR to champion our equal rights and collaborate with stakeholders to secure a safer environment and a brighter future for us. Let our collective voices resound: #QueerBlackLivesMatter."
