Support the Joint Disabled Unity Awaz Centre

We are raising funds to support the Joint Disability Awaz Centre in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Founded by Til Bahadur Karki in 2007, the Joint Disability Awaz Centre houses 48 of Nepal’s most vulnerable children. Many of these children have parents who are in prison or disabled, while others are orphans of war or the devastating 2015 earthquake. The centre takes care of their housing, meals, education, and medical bills.

The centre was born out of struggle and determination on the part of Til Bahadur Karki. Born with a visible physical disability in a remote village in Nepal,Til Bahadur Karki was ostracized and humiliated for his differences. With limited opportunities and no support, Karki left his village at age 9 for Kathmandu. The years following were filled with isolation, sadness, fear and hunger. Turned away from a childcare centre because of his disability, Karki was forced to beg to survive. Despite his circumstances, he was determined to make a difference in the lives of other children who came from similar backgrounds. Unbelievably, by burying his money and only using enough to keep him alive over the years, Karki was able to save enough to open a centre to house and support children. At first, he was able support three children. Now, there are nearly 50 children who are being housed, fed, clothed and educated by the centre.

Funding all the expenses without a steady income and a concrete donor is not easy. The costs of school uniforms, books and stationery and school bags at the beginning of each academic year alone come  to a total of Rs 200,000 (approx $3000 CAD) for all the children. Karki’s struggle is further exacerbated when any of the children falls sick. Karki himself is bedridden for three months during winter due to arthritis. Despite this, when initial funding ran out, Karki went door to door seeking funds to keep the centre open.

The purpose of this fundraiser is to support the Joint Disability Awaz Centre by raising money for land rental payments (Approx $5000/year) and essential groceries for the children (approx. $500/month). Any support is deeply appreciated. In these uncertain times, we are very grateful for your support and cannot express our gratitude enough. All funds go towards supporting vulnerable children in Nepal.
