Support student-built shelters for the homeless

Tax deductible
Please support our efforts to help Oakland's homeless.

Students in the Oakland School for the Arts Production Design program are designing and building mini-shelters for Oakland's unhoused residents. The high school grades have been competing to raise funds for construction supplies to build two more shelters. They've already raised a combined $3,000 in separate fundraisers. Now it's time expand to a wider network of supporters.

This effort not only helps Oakland's vulnerable communities, but also provides an educational opportunity for the high schoolers. Students are expanding their design and construction skills, while increasing their empathy and understanding of social issues.  They're also learning they can make a difference in confronting Oakland's housing crisis and improve the lives of their neighbors.

Any donation will help make an impact and all donations are tax-deductible. Any funds that exceed our current goal will be used for similar future projects.

Oakland's unsheltered population has jumped to over 4,000. New mini-shelters alone won't solve the problem, but they can make an important difference in the lives of residents like Markaya Spikes and her 8 year-old daughter, or Trinidad with her newborn son, who each now live in shelters built by the students last year.

Led by Production Design Chair Jean-Francois Revon and Construction Instructor Jon Taylor, students learn to design, build and install the shelters. They research effective tiny home design, iterate on their initial sketches, work to maximize the small spaces and then create models in 3D software. Next they build the shelters from scratch and transport them to the homeless encampments where they meet the grateful new residents.

All funds raised will go toward lumber, paint, roofing materials and trailers to make the shelters transportable. Please support this important effort at any level you can.

You can also grow your impact dramatically by sharing this campaign through email, social media and word of mouth.

Every 'share' can have a big impact and help us get closer to our goal.
