My name is Helen Wangare, Sophie Kui Mahindu’s younger sister, and I’m writing with a heavy heart and deep gratitude in support of our sister, daughter, niece, and your friend!

On June 16, 2025, while in Kenya, Sophie suffered a cardiac arrest that caused severe brain damage. She spent 35 days in ICU at Nairobi Hospital before we were able to transfer her to the United States for further treatment. She is now receiving intensive inpatient rehabilitation at TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehab Hospital in Houston.

This traumatic event has completely upended her life and placed an immense financial strain on our family. We have been covering critical expenses not fully covered by insurance—over $10,000 per month—including air ambulance transport from Kenya, ground ambulance services, my own room and board while staying near her, and daily transportation to and from the rehab center.

Despite our careful budgeting and tireless efforts to seek assistance, these costs are far beyond what we can sustain. Without outside help, we face the devastating reality of having to limit the care Sophie needs to regain her independence and quality of life.

My sister, Sophie, age 46, has dedicated her life to caring for others as a nurse, clinical manager, U.S. Air Force consultant, private healthcare consultant, and co-host of a charity providing education for girls in rural Kenya. She has spent decades lifting others up—patients, colleagues, and underserved communities—never asking for anything in return.

Sophie has spent her life being there for others in their most vulnerable moments. Now, she is the one in need. Your compassion and generosity could make the difference between her regaining a measure of independence—or losing that opportunity forever.
