On New Year’s Day, everything changed.
Jakiel, Shameka’s 16-year-old son, complained of what seemed like a simple stomach ache. Like any mother would, Shameka believed it was something minor that would pass. But within days, that ordinary concern turned into every parent’s worst nightmare. Jakiel was diagnosed with Stage IV Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Shameka and Jakiel are currently at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, awaiting medical transport to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, where Jakiel will begin intensive treatment. Doctors have advised that their stay in Tennessee could last anywhere from 9 to 18 months.
During this time, Shameka is facing the impossible task of being fully present for her son while also worrying about how to keep life going back home in the Tampa Bay Area. She has applied for FMLA, but approval is uncertain, and even if granted, many financial obligations remain. Monthly household bills, travel-related expenses, medical costs not covered by insurance, and basic necessities such as clothing and shoes—all became urgent needs after having to leave home so suddenly.
This journey will be long, emotional, and challenging, but Shameka is standing strong in faith and doing everything she can to support her baby boy through the fight of his life. We are asking for your help to lift some of the financial burden so she can focus on what matters most—Jakiel’s healing and well-being.
If you are able, please consider donating or sharing this page. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference and reminds this family that they are not walking this road alone. Thank you for your love, prayers, and support during this incredibly difficult time.
