Support Sean's Urgent Liver Transplant Journey

Hi everyone!
Sean was diagnosed with metabolic-related liver cirrhosis (MASH) related to fatty liver disease in December. After multiple doctor visits it was determined he would eventually need a liver transplant, but would be many years down the road. Due to the cirrhosis, he developed portal hypertension and esophageal varices. He underwent 5 variceal bandings to prevent any life threatening bleeding. His other option was a TIPS which bypasses the liver and reduces the varices, but it came with its own side effects and all the doctors recommended leaving that as a last resort and to continue with monthly bandings. His last banding was on 10/13/25.

On 10/20/25, he had an episode of vomiting blood and went to Mease Countryside for evaluation. He had an EGD done which showed no further active bleeding. He remained in the hospital until Saturday 10/25/25 under watchful eye and frequent lab draws, and was deemed stable to discharge home and follow up with the Mayo Clinic for liver transplant evaluation and possible TIPS to manage the varices. On Monday morning 10/27/25, he had another episode of variceal bleeding, but this one was life threatening. He underwent multiple blood transfusions, an emergent EGD and TIPS procedure, and was intubated in the ICU overnight. His hemoglobin continued to drop and his GI doctor believed he was continuing to actively bleed, however at this point the only option for treatment is transplant.

We started brainstorming how to get him to mayo or TGH for the liver transplant evaluation, but he continued to have active bleeding requiring frequent blood transfusions, and navigating insurance was having us run in circles. At the last minute (literally, 7 pm Wednesday evening) we learned he had an accepting bed at Shands Gainesville and would be transferring that night from Mease Countryside.

We have no idea how long he will be at Shands. The work up itself takes a long time, and there’s so many variables that come into play. His family will be traveling with him to Gainesville during this time and staying at hotels and air bnb’s nearby to stay with him as this all unfolds. Any and all donations are so appreciated, as we know Tracie and Sean would never ask anyone for handouts, but often would so freely give themselves. These funds will assist with lodging, transportation, lost wages, food, medical bills, and any surprise expenses that come up.

Sean is so loved by everyone and already appreciates all the support and outpouring of love.
