The Diagnosis
Rome Dacanay, father of my dear friend and guitarist Stevie D. (Buckcherry) has been diagnosed with lung cancer (non-small cell adenocarcinoma). He went to the hospital for breathing issues and after various tests doctors discovered a large mass in his left lung.
While this was a shock to the family, they were grateful to discover that the cancer had not spread. He also tested positive for the biomarkers needed for treatment with immunotherapy which means doctors are optimistic that he will recover. While insurance will cover a percentage of expenses, there are upfront costs needed to start treatment that will not be covered. I have created this GoFundMe to relieve some of the burden from Stevie and his family as they navigate this very expensive treatment process.
Why is this important to me?
My stepdad Bob courageously battled and overcame stage 4 lung cancer (1-2% survival rate) with immunotherapy treatment. Bob has been a father to me and took on that role even more significantly when my biological father passed away. When Bob was diagnosed we were told he had less than 3 months to live. The cancer had spread throughout his body and he had tumors in his brain. The cancer had even made it to his spinal fluid and was circulating throughout his body.
We began making arrangements to ensure that Bob's last months were comfortable, but then we were told about a new treatment that was having miraculous results for those eligible. Amazingly, Bob tested positive for the needed biomarkers and instead of Chemotherapy (which would have surely killed him in his weakened state) he was given immunotherapy.
The doctor told the family that Bob had won the life lottery. He is now 100% cancer free and after a year in remission we are hopeful that we will have many more years together. I would love for my experience to give hope to others who may not know about the lifesaving power of immunotherapy.
What's next?
Your support will help cover the costs of starting Rome's immunotherapy treatment. I have seen the extreme stress this diagnosis has brought upon Stevie and his family. Those of you who know Stevie have seen the kindness and generosity he shows others. I believe together we can make a positive difference for him and his family during this very challenging time.
With Love and Gratitude,
Nicole
