Paige’s Journey: Fighting Cancer with Courage and Love

Hi. This is Lauren Jackson, Paige Gustafson-Johnson's big sis. You may have recently heard that my sister, Paige, received some big and scary news. She has been diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer. This devastating diagnosis came on the heels of her battle with several skin cancers, including melanoma and basal cell carcinoma — scary enough on its own!

As 2025 begins, Paige will face this challenge head-on alongside her loving husband Mitch and their two sweet boys, Crew (3) and Beau (6 months). They will travel to MD Anderson in Houston, where Paige will undergo a series of further tests and surgeries, including a full thyroidectomy, neck dissection (taking out several if not all lymph nodes in her neck), and likely a tonsillectomy. This will be followed by cancer staging and a series of treatments, most likely including radiation and chemotherapy.

The Financial Challenge

The road ahead is daunting, not just emotionally and physically, but financially. The costs include:

Medical expenses: Even with insurance, out-of-pocket costs add up quickly.
Travel and accommodations: Multiple trips and longer-term stays in Houston for treatment.
Childcare: Providing care for Crew and Beau while Paige heals.
Lost income: Mitch will need to miss work to support Paige and care for their boys.
Unexpected needs: Things we can’t even anticipate yet.

Even with short-term disability covering 60% of Paige’s pay, the financial burden they will face is likely to be more than overwhelming.

My prayer is to arm Paige and her family with the support they need so she can focus solely on her health and healing. No one should have to choose between life-saving care and basic needs. Together, we can ease the weight of this journey and show Paige she is not alone.
