Support Mr. Ma’s in New York — a bilingual theater project by Dreamborne Theater

I’m raising funds to bring a deeply personal story to life.

Mr. Ma’s in New York is a bilingual stage reading adapted from Lao She’s classic novel Mr. Ma and Son. As the playwright and dramaturg, I’ve reimagined the story in 1990s New York City, inspired by my own immigrant journey and my connections with the Jewish community here.

The play explores immigration, identity, belonging, and cross-cultural friendship. It celebrates the humor and resilience of those who come to this city with hope, and honors the dialogue between Chinese and Jewish immigrant histories.

Your support will help us present this work in a professional venue—celebrating Jewish warmth and culture, uplifting Asian voices, and building bridges between communities through live theater.

Performances will take place November 21 and 22 at the Black Box Theater, Gibney Studio, Manhattan.

This fundraiser is independently organized by Liangda Hu to support the upcoming bilingual theatre production Mr. Ma’s in New York by Dreamborne Theater,a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All donations will be temporarily collected by Liangda Hu and transferred to Dreamborne Theater’s official account once it becomes active. Donations through this page are not tax-deductible at this stage, but 100% of the fundswill go directly toward production costs, including rehearsal space, design materials, and community engagement programs.
