Support Hugo's Fight Against Diabetes

Hi everyone!

My sweet Hugo was recently diagnosed with canine diabetes. On Thursday, April 25th, I took Hugo to the emergency vet after a two-week long struggle with his appetite, and losing almost four pounds. He was incredibly lethargic, weak, and disinterested in all of his usual favorite things. If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting Hugo, then you know that his personality and attitude are larger than life, so it was very scary to watch his light fade. We were very fortunate and got him to the vet just in time, his blood sugar had risen up to nearly 700 (150 is a standard value), and by the time he was admitted and began treatment, had risen upwards of 800. I was told at that time that there was a 50% chance of him returning home in a stable, manageable condition, but I knew that I couldn’t give up on a chance to try. Over the past few days, the amazing staff at Upstate Vet have been able to get his vitals back under control, and have leveled out his blood sugar. In addition to diabetes, Hugo is also diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. These two diseases combined will cause for a very complicated and involved care plan for Hugo going forward, and he will have to be on a strict diet as well as medicine routine.

I want to be able to provide the best and happiest life for Hugo for as long as I can, but unfortunately the medical expenses from his emergency stay, in addition to the cost of his prescriptions going forward, are going to be incredibly difficult to manage. Hugo has been my best friend and sidekick for the past 14 years, and with proper treatment, can continue to live a long and happy life.
