Support Historic Woodlawn Celestial Gardens
Donation protected
We need your help to maintain the historic Woodlawn Celestial Gardens, previously known as Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Compton, California which was established in 1870.
In 2017, after suffering decades of neglect and bankruptcy, Woodlawn was chained shut.
In 2020, One Section At A Time (OSAAT) successfully led an 18 month, all volunteer effort to clean up and reopen the 11 acre cemetery to the family, friends and descendants of the more than 26,800 people interred at Woodlawn.
In 2021, OSAAT paid eleven years of delinquent property taxes saving the cemetery from auction and possible destruction. As a result, the owner gifted Woodlawn to OSAAT on the promise that we would maintain the cemetery and continue to provide access to the family and friends of the deceased.
In 2022, the preservation and restoration of this 151 year old cemetery begins in earnest!
First quarter projects:
January 2022 - implement a grounds maintenance program in the minimalist style of pioneer cemeteries which is both sustainable and minimizes expenses; develop restoration and preservation plan;
February 2022 - publish the cemetery's history compiled to date, on www.woodlawncelestialgardens.com
March 2022 - initiate digitization of the cemetery records to ensure their preservation
Your support will help make this happen. Please join the growing family of Woodlawn supporters and make an annual donation so we may maintain this cemetery, enable visitation and save a part of history.
