When ICE came for Ernesto, it took nearly three weeks to bring him home.

This summer, ICE wrongfully detained Ernesto, a Fugees Family student with legal protections. For 20 long days, our team worked around the clock — coordinating lawyers, navigating court systems, making hundreds of calls, and fighting at every step until he was free.

Most kids in his situation don’t get that chance.

Across the U.S., immigrant and refugee students face the constant threat of detention and deportation. Many live with the fear that one day they’ll come home to an empty house.
